8 Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.
9 For this, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET," and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
The Book of Romans describes the righteousness of God as revealed in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Chapters 1-11 lay out the doctrine of our justification by faith alone in Jesus Christ.
Chapter 12 teaches us how God’s righteousness is to be displayed in the life of the believer.
Chapter 13 teaches us how God’s righteousness is to be displayed in the world.
8 Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.
What is our debt of love?
It is our response to the never ending gift of God’s grace and affection towards us resulting in our loving each other in the same way that we have been loved.
The 613 stipulations of the Law
Summarized in 10 Commandments
1-4 on God & 5-10 on one another
Stated in 2 Great Commands
Fulfilled in 1 Word:
LOVE
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
“The more excellent anything is, the more will be the counterfeits of it.”
Jonathan Edwards , The Religious Affections
What does counterfeit love look and feel like?
Fake love is shallow rather than unending
Fake love is demanding rather than enduring
Fake love is play acting rather than forgiving
Fake love is deceiving rather than truth telling
The great counterfeit of love is self-love
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.
